“Good training is drama-free”

This quote resonated with one of the women I work with at Concept Move.  Reflecting on the past few months, I think I can see why.

So far this summer I’ve shaved over a minute off of my mile time to 5:42, lost 20 pounds down to 185, improved my body composition and every strength number that I’m paying attention to and found a few nutritional strategies that I can be sustainable with, thanks in no small part to the work of Caitlin and Precision Nutrition at Concept Move.

I’ve also been fortunate enough to build a strong training schedule within the first 12 weeks of diving into personal training and have taken 10 strokes off my golf handicap.

Wait a minute, that can’t be right.  This summer?

By all standards, this summer has been the summer from hell.  Between COVID-19, getting furloughed by my primary employer, the daily occurrences of racial injustices or any of the ongoing stories we read in the news every morning, it’s been a rough go.

Does it matter?

To my training, not really.

I still wake up in the morning and train, I still do my best to make sound nutritional choices and I still drink water, avoid excessive alcohol and try to get my 8 hours.

Good training happens regardless of external factors.  It isn’t always fun.  It isn’t always in the best of circumstances.  It simply has to happen consistently.  When life kicks me down, I don’t stop training, I adjust my training schedule to reflect my new added stressors.  When life feels like a breeze, I’ll get in there and grind it out a bit to chase some cool training adaptations.

I’m turning the ripe age of 27 next week.  If there’s one thing that I’ve learned in my short time here on earth, it’s that life can be difficult.  It can challenge me physically and emotionally and at times feel like it’s got me back on my heels with the shot clock running down.  When those days come, I’ll still be prioritizing the health and capability of my body.

Training isn’t always easy or fun or sexy.  When done consistently and intelligently, it sure can be effective.

Weather the storm, stick to the program and enjoy the days when life hands us lemonade.
